The Teatro José Peón Contreras is identified by a grand, neoclassical façade featuring pale stone arches, balustrades, and a second-floor terrace overlooking the street. Inaugurated on December twenty-first, nineteen oh eight, it was designed by Italian architects Pío Piacentini and Enrico Deserti as a showcase for the wealth generated during the region's henequén boom. It sits on a site that has supported theaters for over two centuries, replacing earlier structures like the Teatro San Carlos to provide Mérida with a modern, European-style opera house.
