Almoravid Koubba

The Almoravid Koubba is a small, domed stone structure that sits well below the current street level of the city. Built around eleven seventeen by the Almoravid sultan Ali ibn Yusuf, it once served as an ablution pavilion where worshippers performed ritual washing before entering the neighboring Ben Youssef Mosque. While the rest of that mosque and the city’s early Almoravid architecture vanished over time, this site survived by being swallowed by layers of debris and city expansion.
