Bab el-Mellah serves as the historic gateway to the old Jewish quarter of Marrakesh, an area known as the Mellah. The gate marks the transition from the city’s medina into a neighborhood established in fifteen fifty-eight by decree of the Saadian Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib. Historically, this quarter provided a distinct space for the city’s Jewish population, and its gates were locked at night to secure the area.
