Daereungwon Tomb Complex

You are approaching a landscape defined by massive, grass-covered mounds that rise like smooth, rolling hills from the flat ground. These are not natural formations but the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, a burial ground for the kings, queens, and nobles of the Silla Kingdom, which ruled from this city for nearly one thousand years. The complex protects twenty-three of these ancient tumuli, which were built between the fourth and sixth centuries to house Silla royalty within sturdy, wood-lined chambers covered by layers of stone and earth.
