The most striking feature of Galatasaray Lisesi is the pair of ornate, green-and-gold gates that open onto İstiklâl Avenue. This is the oldest public high school in Turkey, with roots tracing back to fourteen eighty-one, when Sultan Bayezid the Second established an imperial school on this very site. The name Galatasaray itself translates to Galata Palace, a reference to its original function as a training ground for young men destined for elite service within the Ottoman administration.
