South East Cumberland Street Lane is a narrow, cobbled passage hidden behind the formal Georgian terraces of Edinburgh’s New Town. Unlike the grand, uniform stone façades of the main streets nearby, this lane is defined by its informal, rugged character. It was designed in the early nineteenth century to serve as a functional mews, providing stables and carriage housing for the wealthy residents of the neighboring townhouses.
