Candlestick Park once occupied this site as a massive, concrete arena on the western shore of San Francisco Bay. Opened in nineteen sixty, the stadium served as the home for the San Francisco Giants baseball team and the San Francisco Forty Niners football team. Fans and athletes knew the venue for its fierce, swirling winds and dense, rolling fog that frequently swept off the water. These conditions were so legendary that the Giants famously issued a souvenir pin, the Croix de Candlestick, to any fan who endured a game that lasted into extra innings.
