The U.S. Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory is defined by the stark, six-story concrete building known as Building Eight-Fifteen. Built in nineteen fifty-five, this windowless structure was specifically designed as a Class One bomb shelter, capable of withstanding blast pressures and radioactive fallout. It served as the heart of a secretive Cold War research hub established in nineteen forty-six to manage the decontamination of ships returning from nuclear tests in the Pacific.
