Notre-Dame-des-Victoires is a Roman Catholic church defined by a brick and terra cotta façade that features a glazed apse turned outward to serve as the building's entrance porch. Established in eighteen fifty-six, the parish was created at the request of Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany to support French immigrants who arrived in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. The community originally gathered on a rise they called Frenchmen’s Hill, where many had lived in tents.
