The African-American Shakespeare Company occupies office space at seven hundred sixty-two Fulton Street. Founded by Sherri Young in nineteen ninety-four, the company emerged from her desire to see actors of color cast in major classical roles. During her time in drama school, Young encountered the expectation that graduates should restrict themselves to plays specifically centered on the Black experience. She found this limitation unacceptable and created the company to open the world of Shakespeare and other classics to diverse audiences and artists.
