BlackMan's Art Gallery

BlackMan's Art Gallery operated in San Francisco from nineteen sixty-seven to nineteen seventy-four, establishing itself as the first gallery in the country owned privately by a Black man and devoted exclusively to Black creative expression. Founded by William O. Thomas Jr., who was a cable car gripman and self-taught painter, and his wife, Robin R. Thomas, the gallery provided a space for artists to exhibit work that reflected their own life experiences. It began at six nineteen Haight Street before moving to three twenty-five Haight Street in nineteen seventy-one.
