Attempted assassination of Gerald Ford in San Francisco

On the afternoon of September twenty-second, nineteen seventy-five, President Gerald Ford exited the Post Street entrance of the Saint Francis Hotel after addressing the World Affairs Council. As he paused on the sidewalk to wave at a crowd of onlookers, Sara Jane Moore, a forty-five-year-old accountant who had been standing about forty feet away, pulled a thirty-eight caliber revolver and fired a single shot. The bullet missed the president by roughly five inches, striking the stone wall above the doorway he had just exited.
