The Stanford Court Hotel sits atop Nob Hill, occupying the precise ground where railroad tycoon Leland Stanford built a two-million-dollar mansion in eighteen seventy-six. On the eastern edge of the property, you can find a basalt and granite wall topped with a wrought-iron fence, which is the only surviving remnant of the original estate. The mansion was destroyed during the fire that followed the nineteen oh six earthquake, after which the site transitioned through several identities, including a luxury apartment complex, before the current eight-story hotel opened in nineteen seventy-two.
