The Miami-Dade County Courthouse rises twenty-eight stories above Flagler Street, defined by its ziggurat-style stepped roof and the colossal Doric columns that frame its base. Completed in nineteen twenty-eight, the building was once the tallest structure in the South. Its architect, A. Ten Eyck Brown, constructed this massive neoclassical tower directly around the city’s previous courthouse, allowing government business to continue while the old walls were dismantled from within.
