Oakland Cemetery

Oakland Cemetery is distinguished by its rolling, forty-eight-acre landscape of brick pathways, grand mausoleums, and towering oak and magnolia trees that rise above the surrounding city streets. Founded in eighteen fifty as a six-acre public burial ground then known as City Cemetery, it grew to its present size by the late nineteenth century. It is the final resting place for more than seventy thousand people, including Confederate and Union soldiers, governors, and authors like Margaret Mitchell.
