The Municipal Market occupies a sprawling, fireproof brick and concrete building designed by architect A. Ten Eyck Brown. It opened its doors on May first, nineteen twenty-four, replacing an open-air tent market that had thrived on the site after the Great Atlanta Fire of nineteen seventeen cleared the neighborhood. The structure sits in the heart of the historic Sweet Auburn district, once recognized as one of the most prominent Black business centers in the United States.
