The Northern Trust building at fifty South LaSalle Street is defined by its classical architecture and solid, early twentieth-century stone construction. Designed by the firm Frost and Granger and completed in nineteen oh six, the structure served as a permanent headquarters for the bank founded by Byron Laflin Smith. Its presence marked the growth of the local financial district during a period of rapid economic development in Chicago.
