The College Club of Boston

The College Club of Boston is housed in a four-story brownstone at forty-four Commonwealth Avenue, distinguished by its classic Victorian townhouse design and its history as the first women's college club in the United States. Built in eighteen sixty-four as a private residence for Royal Elisha Robbins, a watch manufacturer, the building reflects the residential architecture that once dominated this stretch of the Back Bay. The club purchased the home in nineteen twenty-four, bringing together a community that traces its origins to a December afternoon in eighteen ninety, when nineteen college-educated women gathered to establish a space for sociability and intellectual growth.
