The brick warehouse buildings along South Street define the Leather District, a small pocket of downtown Boston built on land reclaimed from the South Cove in the nineteenth century. These structures, characterized by their sturdy cast-iron columns and oversized industrial windows, were designed to maximize natural light for workers who processed and traded animal hides. After the Great Boston Fire of eighteen seventy-two forced many businesses to relocate, this neighborhood became the primary hub for the regional leather and shoe industries.
