Assistens Cemetery is defined by high yellow walls that enclose a sprawling, tree-lined garden in the heart of the Nørrebro district. Inaugurated in seventeen sixty, it was originally established as an auxiliary burial ground outside the city ramparts to relieve the plague-stricken, overcrowded churchyards within Copenhagen. What began as a grim site for the city's paupers eventually shifted during the nineteenth century to become the most fashionable final resting place in Denmark.
