Kallio Library

The Kallio Library stands out as a distinct red-brick building positioned at the end of Porthaninkatu. Completed in nineteen twelve, it was the first library in Finland financed entirely by the public sector, serving as a landmark for the local working-class district. Architect Karl Hård af Segerstad designed the structure in a late Art Nouveau style, incorporating a unique layout modeled after a butterfly. The two-story, dome-roofed lending hall sits at the center, with other functional spaces extending outward like wings.
