The Hakaniemi Market Hall is a two-story red brick building that anchors the northern end of its namesake market square. Opened in nineteen fourteen, the hall was designed by architect Karl Hård af Segerstad and stands as a piece of the city's early twentieth-century infrastructure. The surrounding square was constructed on reclaimed land where a narrow strait once separated the Siltasaari area from the mainland, and it has hosted open-air traders since eighteen ninety-seven.
