Havis Amanda

The Havis Amanda fountain is marked by a five-meter-tall bronze statue of a mermaid rising from the water, balanced on a granite pedestal and encircled by four sea lions and water-spouting fish. Unveiled in nineteen oh eight at Helsinki’s Market Square, the work was designed by the Finnish sculptor Ville Vallgren while he was living in Paris. Vallgren envisioned the figure, which he cast in bronze, as an embodiment of Helsinki rising from the sea.
