Helsinki Market Square

The Market Square, or Kauppatori, stretches along the Baltic Sea as a wide, open cobblestone plaza. Originally, this ground was the muddy bottom of a bay where fishing boats docked. In the nineteenth century, the city expanded into the water, filling the harbor to create this central hub for merchants and fishermen.
