The original Château de Bagnolet, which once spanned the border between Paris and the town of Bagnolet, was a sprawling estate favored by the French nobility during the eighteenth century. Owned by the House of Orléans from seventeen nineteen until seventeen sixty-nine, the property featured extensive gardens designed in the style of André Le Nôtre. By the late eighteenth century, the main château building was demolished, leaving behind little more than memories and the Pavillon de l'Ermitage, which remains standing today near the rue de Bagnolet in the twentieth arrondissement of Paris.
