Quartier d'Oberkampf

The Quartier d'Oberkampf is defined by Rue Oberkampf, an artery stretching over a kilometer through the eleventh arrondissement. For over three centuries, this route was known as the Chemin de Ménilmontant, a path leading to a hilltop village. It was only renamed in eighteen sixty-four to honor Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, a Bavarian-born industrialist who founded the famous manufacture of toile de Jouy printed fabrics.
