The original Théâtre Historique was a grand playhouse built in eighteen forty-six for the novelist Alexandre Dumas. Located on the boulevard du Temple, it was designed specifically to stage adaptations of his popular adventure novels. The project attracted high-profile funding, though the government eventually insisted on the name Théâtre Historique because the venue was meant to celebrate French historical romances.
