Cimetière des Batignolles

The Cimetière des Batignolles is defined by the massive, elevated concrete viaduct of the Boulevard Périphérique that slices directly through its grounds. Opened in eighteen thirty-three to serve the independent commune of Batignolles-Monceau, this eleven-hectare site became a resting place for writers, artists, and thousands of residents. Its layout changed drastically in nineteen sixty-nine when the construction of the city’s major ring road forced the removal of many graves and permanently altered the landscape.
