Batignolles Cemetery

The Batignolles Cemetery is defined by the heavy, continuous roar of traffic from the Boulevard Périphérique, a massive ring road that cuts directly across its grounds. Established in eighteen thirty-three, the cemetery covers eleven hectares and contains approximately fifteen thousand graves. While it offers a quiet refuge beneath nine hundred mature chestnut and maple trees, the construction of the highway viaduct in the late nineteen sixties forever altered its landscape, forcing the removal of some burial plots and isolating others beneath the concrete span.
