The Montmartre Cemetery is distinct for being sunken into the earth, sitting deep within the hollow of a former gypsum quarry. Because it lies far below street level, the roads of Paris, including the massive iron Caulaincourt Bridge built in eighteen eighty-eight, literally pass over the graves and winding paths below.
