Square de Jessaint

park garden

The Square de Jessaint occupies a patch of land once dominated by the barrière de la Chapelle, an octroi gate built by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux in seventeen ninety. This gate stood at the edge of the old commune of La Chapelle, controlling the flow of goods into Paris until it was destroyed during the eighteen-sixties. Today, the square is identified by its proximity to the elevated tracks of metro line two, which were constructed directly over the path where the barrier once stood.
