The Petite Ceinture is a defunct railway line that once formed a complete circle around Paris. Built between eighteen fifty-two and eighteen sixty-nine, the tracks were originally designed to connect the city's major train stations and facilitate the movement of troops and supplies along the fortifications. By eighteen sixty-two, the line opened to passengers, becoming a vital urban transport route that reached its peak in nineteen hundred during the Universal Exposition, when it carried thirty-nine million people.
