Monument à la République

The Monument à la République is a towering bronze figure of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic, standing twenty-five meters above the pavement. She holds an olive branch of peace in one hand and a tablet of human rights in the other, while a bronze lion stands guard at her feet. Designed by the sculptor Léopold Morice and his architect brother Charles, the monument was inaugurated on July fourteenth, eighteen eighty-three. It rests upon a stone pedestal surrounded by three large allegorical figures representing Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity.
