Salle Le Peletier

The Salle Le Peletier once held the center of Parisian cultural life on the site of the former Hôtel de Choiseul. Inaugurated in August eighteen twenty-one, the opera house was designed by architect François Debret as a temporary replacement for the Rue de Richelieu theater. Although intended to be short-lived, the structure served as the home of the Paris Opera for fifty-two years. Its luxurious interior, decorated in white and gold, hosted the premieres of major works such as Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable and Le Prophète.
