Place de l'Estrapade

Place de l'Estrapade is a quiet, tree-lined square in the fifth arrondissement where the streets of Lhomond and Fossés-Saint-Jacques meet. It sits near the summit of the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, along the former route of the twelfth-century Philippe Auguste wall. While visitors now recognize the buildings here from their appearance in contemporary television, the square takes its name from a brutal military punishment, the strappado, which was carried out on this spot until the seventeenth century.
