Pletzl

The Pletzl, a Yiddish word meaning little place, is a historic enclave within the Marais neighborhood defined by the intersection of narrow, cobblestone streets like the Rue des Rosiers. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, this district became a destination for thousands of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants fleeing pogroms and poverty in Eastern Europe. They built a dense community here, establishing synagogues, schools, and businesses that created a distinct atmosphere of Yiddishland in the center of Paris.
