Lamarck–Caulaincourt station is defined by a deep tunnel entrance that rests between two symmetrical staircases climbing the steep slopes of the Montmartre hill. Opened on October thirty-first, nineteen twelve, the station sits twenty-five meters below street level. Because the line had to pierce directly through the heart of the butte to reach the northern suburbs, engineers built the station platforms far beneath the bustling intersection of Rue Lamarck and Rue Caulaincourt.
