The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain occupies a stately five-story building on the Place du Palais-Royal, defined by its uniform stone facade and historic arcades. Constructed in eighteen fifty-five for the first Universal Exposition, the building originally opened as the Grand Hôtel du Louvre. For many years, it served as a bustling department store and later as the Louvre des Antiquaires before its most recent transformation.
