Dexameni Square

Dexameni Square is marked by the presence of a plain, nineteenth-century white building that sits beside an open-air cinema. This structure hides the entrance to a Roman-era cistern, the reservoir for Hadrian's Aqueduct, which was completed in the second century under Roman rule. While the name Dexameni translates simply to reservoir, the site holds a long history of supplying water to the city. Repairs in eighteen seventy brought the ancient system back into active use, and it continued to provide water for Athens until nineteen forty.
