Qilla Ahluwalia is marked today by a cluster of older buildings featuring ornate wooden balconies and lattice work, set within a dense, bustling market area only one hundred meters from the Golden Temple. Originally constructed around seventeen-sixty by the Sikh leader Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, it functioned as a military fortress designed to guard the holy shrine and the surrounding residential colony from invaders.
