Hathi Gate is recognizable by two brick pillars connected to each other, standing as the modern remnants of one of the original twelve entrances to the fortified city of Amritsar. Once known as Shazada Darwaza, the site is now identified by the name Hathi Gate, which is inscribed on one of the pillars. These gates were commissioned in eighteen twenty-two by Prince Sher Singh, the son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, as part of a major fortification project to protect the growing city.
