The Golden Temple, or Sri Harmandir Sahib, is defined by its gleaming sanctum, which sits at the center of a large, sacred pool known as the Amrit Sarovar. The upper floors of this structure are encased in gold leaf, creating a shimmering reflection on the water that identifies the site from a distance. Unlike many religious structures built on elevated platforms, this temple was constructed at a level lower than the surrounding ground to express the Sikh value of humility.
