The Taj Lake Palace appears to float on the waters of Lake Pichola, a vision of white marble punctuated by domes, cupolas, and arched balconies. Built on a four-acre island, the structure serves as a singular, isolated landmark within the center of the lake. It was constructed between seventeen forty-three and seventeen forty-six by Maharana Jagat Singh the Second, who intended the palace to be a secluded summer residence away from the public life of his court at the main City Palace.
