Neve Tzedek is characterized by low-rise houses with thick walls, arched windows, and tiled roofs that sit in contrast to the surrounding city's modern high-rises. Founded in eighteen eighty-seven, it was the first Jewish neighborhood built outside the crowded walls of the ancient port of Jaffa. A group of families, including the Chelouches and the Rokachs, purchased the land on sand dunes to create what they named Neve Tzedek, or "Oasis of Justice," taken from a verse in the Book of Jeremiah.
