The Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral dominates the Zócalo with its massive, twin-towered facade and an architectural blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. Construction began in fifteen seventy-three, immediately following the Spanish conquest, and stretched over two hundred and fifty years until eighteen thirteen. Architects intentionally placed the structure atop the former sacred precinct of Tenochtitlan, even using stones scavenged from the demolished Templo Mayor to build its foundations.
