The Palacio de Bellas Artes is unmistakable for its massive, golden-orange dome and the white Carrara marble that clads its exterior. Intended to open in nineteen ten for the centennial of Mexico’s independence, the building suffered from the soft, water-soaked soil of the former lakebed beneath it. Construction began in nineteen oh four under Italian architect Adamo Boari, but the structure started sinking almost immediately. When the Mexican Revolution halted work in nineteen ten, the project sat stalled for nearly two decades.
