Kathmandu Durbar Square is defined by its dense collection of tiered, pagoda-style temples and ornate palace courtyards, all built from dark, intricately carved wood and red brick. Known locally as Hanuman Dhoka, this historic plaza served as the royal residence for Malla and Shah kings for over five hundred years. It remains the ceremonial heart of the city, where royal coronations occurred and where the indigenous Newar people continue to host traditional festivals.
