The Oosterkerk is a massive, seventeenth-century brick building defined by its tall windows and a lead-covered dome tower. Built between sixteen sixty-nine and sixteen seventy-one, it served the Eastern Islands during Amsterdam’s era as a hub for shipbuilding and maritime trade. Designed by architects Daniël Stalpaert and Adriaan Dortsman, the church originally functioned as a house of Reformed worship until it closed in the nineteen sixties due to its dilapidated condition.
