Al Balad, the historic heart of Jeddah, is defined by its towering multi-story houses built from Red Sea coral stone. These structures, featuring intricate wooden balconies known as rawasheen, were designed centuries ago to capture sea breezes and provide shade in the humid coastal climate. Founded in the seventh century, this district served for over a millennium as the primary gateway for pilgrims arriving by ship to journey toward Makkah.
