Bab Sharif

Bab Sharif is a landmark in the southern section of Al-Balad, marking the historic perimeter of Old Jeddah. It was one of eight original gates constructed in the sixteenth century to fortify the city against naval threats, specifically Portuguese warships. While the original city wall was demolished in nineteen forty-seven to accommodate the city’s rapid expansion, the site remains associated with the memory of that early defensive architecture.
